Hectors Dolphin Kenning

Today I have been learning about Kennings, they are a type of poetry. I wrote this kenning about my favourite animal Hectors Dolphin, sometimes we go to Akaroa and we see them jumping in the water and it is very cool as there are not many left in the world so it is good Akaroa has a sanctuary and is doing a lot to save these dolphins.  What is your favourite animal?  @https://summerlearningjourney.blogspot.com/2021/12/

  1. Kia ora Sia! What a beautiful kennings poem about the Hector's dolphins! You have really captured the unique characteristics of the Hector's species as water acrobats, dancers and New Zealand taonga. Thank you for sharing the information about the Akaroa Marine Sanctuary which I have not visited but now I will be sure to do so when I visit the South Island next year. We plan to go to Kaikoura to whale watch on our trip. Have you been to Kaikoura? My favourite animal is the seal, which is also a marine animal! My family call me "seal" as my nickname because I always clap my hands together when I'm happy! I also really like whales. I bought my husband a pounamu necklace of a whale tail for Christmas this year. I hope that you have had a lovely Christmas with family. Did you manage to do any Hector's dolphin watching over the Christmas break? Keep up your awesome work and I look forward to following your blog over summer. 2. Kia ora Sia. Awesome poem! I love the line 'sea splicer' that starts your poem off. Have you thought about making a Screencastify of you reading your poem? Remember to enter your poems into the poetry slam by filling in this form. Then you can visit the other poems on this site.

  3. Kia ora Sia,

Wow! This is an excellent poem, you have really captured lots of special characteristics of the Hectors Dolphin. I love the line ‘Chitty-chatterer’, dolphins make such a unique sound and they do chatter a lot!

Did you enjoy this activity? Have you written poetry like this before? I love writing poetry, i think it's a really creative and emotive way of writing.

As Phil mentioned, perhaps you could use Screencastify to record yourself reading the poem out loud. It is always awesome to hear someone reading their poetry out loud, it always makes a poem so much more special to hear it read by the author!

Keep up the awesome and creative mahi.

    Ngā mihi,
    Lauren
